What's the difference between a work order and an invoice?

A work order is an internal document that tracks what needs to be done and records what was done — crew, materials, hours, and status. An invoice is the billing document sent to the client after the work is complete. Most contractors generate an invoice from the work order once the job is finished.

What's the difference between a work order and an estimate?

An estimate (or quote) is sent to a prospective client before the job starts — it proposes the scope and price. A work order is created once the job is approved and authorizes the crew to perform the work. Estimates come first; work orders follow once the client agrees.
